The Sun Harbor Chorus is the San Diego Chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society, performing four-part a cappella harmonies in the Barbershop style. Founded in 1946, we are the longest-established barbershop chorus in San Diego County.
What is "the Barbershop Style"?
Barbershop is a dynamic style of a cappella (voice-only) musical performance that originated in the United States in the late 1800′s, and has continued to evolve since then. More than just singing, it encompasses the total performance. Its close harmonies are highly pleasing to the ear, which isn’t surprising, since its earliest practitioners were simply singing what sounded the best to them. But beyond the characteristic “ringing chords”, the barbershop style also emphasizes vocal and visual interpretation to bring out the message of each song. Because of this, we prefer songs with simple, heartfelt messages and pleasant melodies. Good barbershop is both beautiful music and a powerful emotional experience for audience members and singers.
Come Sing with Us
If you love to sing, we have a place for you, whether you’re an average singer with limited experience or a highly trained singer who has been performing for years. If you sight read, that’s great, but if not, we provide audio learning tracks and small-group sessions to help you learn your part. Barbershop singing is a fellowship, based on the knowledge that none of us can do it alone. We must all work together to create a wonderful musical experience for ourselves and our audiences. Weekly rehearsals and activities include: musical education, voice training, performance skills, quartet singing and support of vocal musical programs within the community and the public and private school systems.
